RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As burnout syndrome has been barely analyzed in pediatricians, it was considered relevant to explore labor satisfaction and tiredness in these professionals and to evaluate possible associated factors. POPULATION AND METHODS: The Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire was voluntarily and anonymously applied to pediatricians. Personal and professional variables were included. Bivariate and multivariate statistical techniques were employed for analyzing registered data. RESULTS: Answer rate reached 89%. Mean values related with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement were 30.60 ± 10.98, 0.51 ± 5.95 and 35.76 ± 7.32, respectively. It was established that as time of pediatric performance went on, personal achievement increased and depersonalization diminished. Depersonalization also decreased in physicians carrying out managerial jobs. The clusters obtained through multivariate analysis showed a higher to lower severity ordination, going from pediatricians with lower personal achievement and higher values of depersonalization and emotional exhaustion (classes 1 and 2) to pediatricians with lower emotional exhaustion, medium depersonalization and higher personal achievement (classes 4 and 5). CONCLUSIONS: The polled pediatricians evidenced higher values of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and a medium personal achievement. This dimension became higher as they revealed more years of professional performance. Depersonalization was lower in physicians carrying out managerial jobs. Multivariate analysis was useful to group individuals in accordance with their affinities on the studied variables.

Introducción. Dado que el síndrome de desgaste profesional (burnout) ha sido poco analizado en pediatras y, sabida su relevancia, se consideró de interés explorar la satisfacción laboral y eldesgaste en profesionales de esta especialidad, además de evaluar posibles factores asociados.Población y métodos. Se aplicó, en forma anónima y voluntaria, el cuestionario Maslach BurnoutInventory a médicos de un hospital de niños y se incluyeron variables personales y profesionales.La información se analizó mediante técnicas estadísticas bivariadas y multivariadas. Resultados. La tasa de respuesta fue del 89 por ciento y lospromedios de cansancio emocional, despersonalización y realización personal fueron 30,60 más menos 10,98, 0,51 más menos 5,95 y 35,76 más menos 7,32. Se comprobó que, a mayor cantidad de años de desempeño profesional en la pediatría, aumentaba la realización personal y disminuía la despersonalización, que fue tambiénmenor en las personas que realizaban tareas de conducción. Los agrupamientos obtenidos a través del análisis multivariado mostraron un ordenamiento de mayor a menor y estuvieron integrados por pediatras cuyo perfil iba desde baja realización personal y valores superiores de despersonalización y cansancio emocional (clases 1 y 2) hasta individuos con menor cansancio emocional, despersonalización intermedia y realización personal más elevada (clase 4 y 5).Conclusiones. Los profesionales de la pediatría encuestados presentaron altos valores de cansancio emocional y despersonalización, mientrasque la realización personal resultó intermedia.Esta dimensión fue superior cuantos más años se tenían de desempeño profesional y la despersonalizaciónresultó menor en los médicos quedesempeñaban trabajos de gestión. El análisis multivariado permitió agrupar individuos según afinidades en las variables estudiadas.
